The Chancellery of the Holy Synod officially transmitted what measures were adopted in the meeting of the BOR Synod on Thursday, February 29, 2024. The Archbishop of Tomis received a “synodal reprimand”, in return the spokesperson of the BOR Vasile Bănescu will no longer be able to communicate in the important moments.

Through an official statement, the chancellery of the Holy Synod transmitted on Thursday, February 29, 2024, after the end of the meeting held in the Aula Magna “Teoctist the Patriarch” in the Palace of the Patriarchate, under the presidency of His Beatitude Father Patriarch Daniel, what measures were adopted.
Thus, IPS Teodosie was sanctioned with a written synodal reprimand (written synodal warning) for violating the statutory order of the Church and disturbing the peace in the life of the Church and society, in return the spokesperson of the BOR, Vasile Bănescu, received a ban from further communicate on behalf of the Romanian Orthodox Church “at important moments”. Communication will be ensured by the Chancellery of the Holy Synod, “until the reorganization of the Press Office of the Romanian Patriarchate”.
BOR spokesperson Vasile Bănescu specified, at the request of journalists, that the measure aimed at him is not a dismissal. “It is not about dismissal, but about the assumption of important communications by the Chancellery of the Synod”, stated Banescu.

“Clarifications regarding the decision of the Holy Synod regarding some recent attempts to violate the statutory order of the Church and to disturb the peace in the life of the Church and society
QOn Thursday, February 29, 2024, in the Aula Magna “Teoctist the Patriarch” in the Palace of the Patriarchate, under the presidency of His Beatitude Father Patriarch Daniel, the working session of the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church takes place.
Since various erroneous information and speculations appeared in the media regarding the decision of the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church regarding some recent attempts to violate the statutory order of the Church and disturb the peace in the life of the Church and society, we specify that The Holy Synod decided the following:

“take note, with sorrow, of the attitude of the Most Reverend Father Theodosius,
The Archbishop of Tomis, through which a purely ecclesiastical debate was exposed to the public in the express sense of being used by actions of rebellion and public pressure on the Holy Synod“;

“approves that, according to art. 5C lit. a of the Regulation of the canonical disciplinary authorities and the courts of the Romanian Orthodox Church, His Eminence Father Teodosie, Archbishop of Tomis, to be sanctioned with a written synodal reprimand (written synodal warning) for violating the statutory order of the Church and disturbing the peace in the life of the Church and society , through acts of rebellion, indiscipline and public pressure“;

“approves that, in the event that His Eminence Father Teodosie, the Archbishop of Tomis, will relapse by being involved again in acts and actions of violating the statutory order of the Church and disturbing the peace in the life of the Church and society, regardless of the reasons cited for this, to be sent to the judgment of the First Episcopal Consistory“;

“A reminded of the fact that, in order to support some projects or wishes of a diocese and/or a hierarch, it is forbidden to use public demonstrations that incite rebellion, non-compliance with the canonical and statutory order of the Church, or create public pressure on the church authority or to generate disorder in the Church and society“;

“noted that, since the personal opinions of Mr. Vasile Bănescu are not the equivalent of an official press release of the Romanian Patriarchate, starting from March 1, 2024, the press releases of the Romanian Patriarchate will be issued by the Chancellery of the Holy Synod, until the reorganization of the Press Office of the Romanian Patriarchate“.
At the end of the work session of the Holy Synod, a press release will be published that will also present the other approved decisions.
