A new method of online fraud makes victims in Romania. Under the pretext of a promotional offer from the Zara brand, the scams try to obtain the users’ banking data, warns the National Cyber Security Directorate (DNSC).
Mihai Rotariu is manager of the Communication, Media and Marketing Directorate of DNSC
Attackers promise a so-called “Secret box”, “Mystery Box” with clothing items, available in exchange for completing a quick survey. Once users access the link provided, they are redirected to a false site, where they are requested personal and banking data.
“The message will guide you to a false site, where the attackers are trying to collect sensitive information, including your bank data,” warns DNSC specialists.
To make the trap even more convincing, the victims are asked to pay an apparently small fee, of about 9.95 lei, for the delivery of the box. In reality, however, they risk compromising their banking data and losing large amounts of money.
“It always checks the authenticity of an offer on the official website of the brand. Pay attention to pages’ creation data – frauds are often associated with new accounts. Never provide personal or banking data without checking the source! ”, Recommend DNSC.
Users are advised to be vigilant and avoid accessing suspicious offers on social networks or by unsolicited messages.
Another type of fraud reported by DNSC
Recently, in February, the National Directorate for Cyber Security warned of romantic deceptions, which increase in the month of love, exploiting the emotions of potential victims.
The most popular masks used by romantic criminals are of famous actors or public personalities, soldiers or doctors in the mission, but also businessmen or investors in difficult temporary situations.
Active on dating platforms and social networks, they will quickly promise true love and make every effort to build a virtual relationship, but the purpose is one: to steal the money of vulnerable people.
“After establishing the relationship and creating a feeling of approach and confidence, invariably, the requests for financial aid appear. Frequently, health emergencies, accidents, blocked bank accounts or lost documents are invoked, that is, different dramatic situations, which always require money.
Thus, the mission military man can request money to return home or access a large amount of money blocked in a bank account or in a foreign country ”, transmitted last month DNSC.
This type of scams happens throughout the year. The world must be vigilant and do not fall prey to “love bombing” tactics.
