After 2-3 with Inter in Serie A on Saturday, Juventus Torino blamed the shock and collapsed in Istanbul on Tuesday night in the first leg of the Champions League play-off. Galatasaray prevailed 5-2, the second most drastic defeat suffered in history, in European cups, by the Piedmontese group.
In the inferno at Istanbul’s ‘Ali Sami Yen’ arena, the Bianconeri led 2-1 at half-time thanks to a brace from Dutchman Koopmeiners, but were overwhelmed in the second half by goals from Lang (two), Sanchez and Boey.
Juventus finished the game with 10 men. Colombian Juan Cabal was eliminated in the 67th minute.
Juve’s most stinging beating came many years ago. The Wiener Sportklub-Juventus match ended with a score of 7-0. It was the preliminary round of the European Cup, played on October 1, 1958, on the Prater in Vienna.
After the 3-1 first leg win in Turin, the second leg should, in theory, have been easier. Instead, it turned out to be a nightmare: a 7-0 defeat, with four goals scored by Hameri.
