David Popovici qualified for the 100m freestyle final with a competition record

Favorite of the 100 meters freestyle event, David Popovici (21 years old) has access to the final of the European Swimming Championship in Paris from the first position in the second semi-final. The Dynamo player was clocked in 46.72 seconds, which is a competition record.

The Bucharest native dominated the second semi-final, being in first place both after the first length of the pool and at the end. His time of 46.72 seconds is a new European Senior Championship record. As you know, the world record for the event is held by the Chinese Pan Zhanle, set on July 31, 2024, at the Paris Olympics: 46.40 seconds.

The Russian Egor Kornev had the 3rd time, 47.27, and the Spanish Luca Hoek le Guenedal the 2nd, 47.26.

In the evenings, in the morning, Popovici was clocked in 47.13 seconds. The following places according to the time in which they were recorded were the Croatian Jere Hribar (47.80), the Spanish Luca Hoek le Guenedal (47.90), the Hungarian Kristof Milak (47.92), the Russian Egor Kornev (47.97), the Italian Carlos D’Ambrosio (48.02), the Dutch Sean Niewold (48.05), the Hungarian Nandor Nemeth (48.11), German Josha Salchow (48.35) and Russian Aleksandr Shchegolev (48.36).

Two other Romanians competed in the 100 m freestyle. Patrick Sebastian Dinu finished the series in 27th place (48.83), and Eric Ştefan Andries was ranked 58th (49.79).

David Popovici won two consecutive European titles in the 100 m freestyle, in Rome, in 2022, and in Belgrade, in 2024.

David Popovici will compete in lane 4 in the final on Wednesday, August 12.
