Five beaches on the Romanian coast retain in 2026 the prestigious international “Blue Flag” label, one of the most well-known certifications for the quality and safety of coastal areas. The distinction was announced on Tuesday by the Ministry of Economy, Digitalization, Entrepreneurship and Tourism.
Award-winning beaches are located in Năvodari, Eforie Sud and Olimp. These are Axxis Nova and Phenicia, from Năvodari, Azur and Citadel, from Eforie Sud, as well as Phenicia Blue View, from Olimp.

Romania could have a new beach included in the program starting next year. Dharma, from Eforie Sud, is currently in the pilot phase and is preparing for the assessment necessary to obtain the certification “Blue Flag” in 2027.
What a beach must fulfill for “Blue Flag”
Obtaining the “Blue Flag” label requires compliance with 33 criteria, divided into four broad categories: environmental education and information, water quality, environmental management, safety and services. Certification is not permanent. After it is granted, compliance with the standards is checked annually by a non-governmental organization affiliated with the Environmental Education Foundation.
In terms of environmental education and information, beaches must display information about the program, water quality, the ecosystem in the area and nearby cultural sites. There must also be a map of the beach facilities, a code of conduct and at least five environmental education activities must be organized.
In terms of water quality, regular sampling and compliance with established limits for bacteria such as Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci are mandatory. The area must be free of pollution and not affected by industrial or household waste.
Cleaning, recycling and protecting the environment
Most of the criteria, 15 in number, concern environmental management. The beach must be clean, have enough trash cans and recycling containers, maintained public toilets and a proper waste collection and disposal system.
The protection of vulnerable areas and the monitoring of ecosystems are also pursued. At the same time, certain activities are prohibited, such as unauthorized camping, littering, access of pets or unauthorized vehicles. Beach facilities must be safe and well maintained and sustainable transport is encouraged.
The safety of tourists, an essential condition
The last seven criteria relate to safety and service. These include the existence of lifeguards or other protective measures, access to first aid equipment and the existence of emergency plans, including water pollution.
The program also aims for responsible use of the beach for activities such as swimming or water sports. Tourists must have access to potable water, and at least one “Blue Flag” beach in each municipality must be accessible to people with physical disabilities.
