Denis-Laurean Popescu qualified for the semifinals of the 100 m butterfly at the European Senior Swimming Championship in Paris. The Dynamo player also set a national record. Tonight, at 19.52, David Popovici will fight for the continental title in the 100 m freestyle. The final will be broadcast by TVR Sport.
Popescu was clocked with the seventh time of the series, 51.44 seconds. In the semifinals of the same event, Vlad-Ştefan Mihalache also qualified, with the 18th time (52.07). The previous record belonged to Daniel Cristian Martin, from June 16, 2019, being 52.35 seconds. The semi-final of the event is scheduled for this evening, from 20.33.
Before that, also this evening, from 7:52 p.m., David Popovici will fight for his third consecutive continental medal in the 100 m freestyle. The Dynamo player qualified for the final, being clocked in 46.72, which is a competition record. The precedent also belonged to him: 46.86 seconds.
Popovici will swim in lane 4, alongside the Russian Egor Kornev (lane 3) and the Spaniard Luca Hoek le Guenedal (lane 5). Kristof Milak (Hungary), Carlos D’Ambrosio (Italy), Nandor Nemeth (Hungary), Tomas Navikonis (Lithuania) and Jere Hribar (Croatia) will also play in the final.
David Popovici won two consecutive European titles in the 100 m freestyle, in Rome, in 2022, and in Belgrade, in 2024.
In the 200 m breaststroke, Matei State and Darius Coman failed to qualify for the semifinals. The former was 21st in the heats in 2:12.04 and the other was 25th in 2:12.61.
