The possible limitation of alerts regarding the presence of the police on navigation applications makes Romanian drivers already look for alternative signaling methods. There have been discussions on social networks about the use of icons that are not related to the police, but which could become, among users, signals for radars or control crews.
Among the circulated variants are the symbols for weather phenomena. A rain or cloud alert could thus take on a different meaning for drivers who want to warn each other.
For now, Romania has not announced the removal of these functions from the applications.
The subject arose after a decision by the Court of Justice of the European Union, which allows member states, in certain situations, to temporarily limit the transmission of information about police checks through navigation applications.
The decision does not oblige Romania to introduce such a measure.
Some drivers say they don’t see a reason to remove the alerts, believing they can cause drivers to slow down.
“I don’t see the point, that you see the police, as it is also signaled in the West where there are radars, where there are police, to warn you. I don’t think it is necessary for the police to lie in wait to catch you, but you are warned and take care to drive properly”said a driver, for Antena 3 CNN.
Others argue that users will quickly find ways to convey the same information, even if certain symbols are removed.
The idea of using alternative icons is already circulating online.
However, authorities warn that real-time reporting by crews can affect certain police operations, including actions to identify drivers who are driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
The message sent by the Ministry of Internal Affairs is that, regardless of the symbols used in navigation applications, the safest way to avoid penalties remains to follow the rules of the road.
Titi Aur: “The Romanian will find a solution”
Former rally driver and defensive driving expert Titi Aur believes that simply introducing restrictions will not solve road safety problems.
“At the same time, it is demonstrated that only coercion, only restriction, does not solve the problem. Making a large fine, making many years of imprisonment or making such restrictions (…) does not solve the problem, that the Romanian will find a solution”said Titi Aur for the cited source.
In his opinion, the problem must be addressed primarily through road education, so that drivers understand why it is important to follow the rules, not just fear penalties.
“Man first thinks how to do a trick to break the rule”the expert also said, referring to the behavior of some drivers.
Titi Aur claims that road education should start from school and continue even after obtaining a driver’s license. He believes that Romania needs a coordinated strategy for road safety, not just punitive measures.
