Supported by numerous fans, Ecuador’s soccer team prevailed 2-1 against Germany in the last stage of Group E of the Canada, Mexico and USA World Cup. In the other game, Ivory Coast defeated Curacao (2-0).
Despite being qualified for the round of 16 from first place, Germany started the match in New York / New Jersey strongly. And Leroy Sane opened the scoring with a placed shot, in the 2nd minute. At this stage, the Ecuadorians accused Pavlovic of dangerous play and a foul, who raised his leg to the level of his head, hitting Vite. After the VAR check, the goal was validated.
Gradually, the South Americans came back and insisted. They equalized with a shot from outside the box sent by Angulo, in the 9th minute. The Germans responded with Havertz’s header, the ball being caught by the goalkeeper Galindez and it was 1-1 at halftime.
Immediately after the restart, in the 46th minute, the Germans received a penalty from referee Tori Penso, who assessed that Havertz was fouled in the box by Ordonez. Asked by VAR to see the phase, the American reversed her decision, sanctioning a foul committed by Sane on Vite.
Neuer intervened to save Valencia’s shot in the 62nd minute. The 73rd minute brought a great opportunity for the Ecuadorians, missed by Vite, and three minutes later Sane shot weakly, the ball landing in Galindez’s arms.
Tah and Stiller blocked Kevin Rodriguez’s shot in the 77th minute, but the Union St Gilloise player got even a minute later when he fed Plata’s goal. Ecuador managed to win the game even though the Germans forced the tie at the end.
In the other group match, Ivory Coast won 2-0 against Curacao, qualifying for the next stage. They scored Nicolas Pepe (min. 7 and 86).
