Free Wi-Fi networks in coffee shops, airports or hotels can expose personal data to cyber attackers, DNSC warns. Specialists recommend some simple measures to protect accounts and sensitive information.
A free Wi-Fi connection may seem like a practical solution when we are in the city, at the airport or on vacation, but using these networks comes with risks for the security of personal data. The National Cyber Security Directorate (DNSC) warns that public networks can be used by hackers to intercept information transmitted or to create digital traps.
According to experts, cybercriminals can use techniques such as creating fake networks, known as Wi-Fi spoofing, in which they mimic connections offered by that location, to get users to connect.
“Whether you’re going on a weekend getaway or an international trip, digital safety should be high on your priority list. Connected devices, online bookings and access to public Wi-Fi networks can become vulnerable points if you don’t take protective measures,” the representatives of the institution sent.
Once such a network is accessed, data transmitted without protection, such as passwords, banking information or login sessions, can reach unauthorized persons, DNSC explained on Friday, July 24, in a post on social networks.

▪️ Only connect to secure Wi-Fi networks or use a VPN
▪️ Avoid accessing bank accounts from public or unsecured devices
▪️ Enable two-step authentication for all important accounts
▪️ Don’t post your real-time location on social networks
▪️ Check the legitimacy of booking sites and travel apps
▪️ Back up important data before you leave.
