Starting Wednesday, Romanian drivers are paying more for each fuel, after fuel prices rose with the end of temporary support measures applied by the state.
The biggest increase is in the case of diesel, whose price has increased by approximately 36 money per liter, due to the return of the excise duty to the previous level, the Botoșanean reports. At the same time, the expiry of the ceiling on the commercial surcharge allows the oil companies to freely set the prices charged at the pump.
For a 50-liter tank of diesel, drivers will pay approximately 18 lei more than before, the source said. Gasoline has also become more expensive, but the increase is less, according to the cited source.
Rising fuel prices don’t just affect drivers. Specialists point out that the increase in transport costs is usually transmitted in the prices of food, goods and services, and there is a risk of a new wave of price increases in the economy.
The Competition Council has announced that it is monitoring the evolution of the market after the expiry of the temporary measures and is watching how the tax changes and the evolution of international oil quotations are reflected in the prices charged at the pump.
In the coming period, the evolution of fuel prices will depend both on the dynamics of the international oil market and on the commercial policy of each distribution network.
Why fuel prices have increased and what’s next
Analysts have been drawing attention since last week that the oil market is under pressure from tensions in the Middle East, and any further increase in international quotations may also be transmitted to prices at the pump.
Energy expert Silviu Gresoi explains why “The Truth” that the evolution of prices does not depend exclusively on the cost of oil: “For Romania, the increase in oil prices is gradually transmitted in fuel prices, through international quotations, the leu-dollar exchange rate, refining and transport costs, but also through the level of taxes. Pump prices do not necessarily increase immediately and in the same proportion as the price of the barrel, because there are stocks, contracts and trade gaps.”
He warned that if the situation in the Middle East worsens and the main oil transport routes are affected, “it is possible to see further increases in petrol and diesel prices”.
For his part, the president of the Intelligent Energy Association, Dumitru Chisăliță, emphasized that the effects of more expensive fuel exceed the cost borne by drivers: “Higher diesel affects transportation, agriculture, construction and distribution, and these costs are then passed on to food and other commodity prices. Therefore, a prolonged oil shock can generate a new wave of inflation and reduce purchasing power.”
At the same time, the analysts showed that the price is influenced by three main factors: the evolution of international oil quotations, the exchange rate of the dollar and the level of taxes applied in Romania.
