In full university admissions season, dental schools continue to attract thousands of applicants, despite the fact that the job market in the field is becoming increasingly difficult for young graduates. The College of Dentists warns that Romania is facing a surplus of specialists, while the number of patients remains low due to the high costs of treatments.
Many recent graduates have difficulty finding a job after completing their studies, according to a ProTV News report. Some choose to work as volunteers to gain professional experience and increase their chances of employment.
According to experts in the field, dental offices are often reluctant to recruit early-career doctors, as patients prefer professionals with experience and a solid portfolio of cases.
Romania exceeds the European average in the number of dentists
Data from the College of Dentists show that approximately 25,000 dentists are active in Romania, which means one specialist for approximately 735 inhabitants. By comparison, the European Union average is about one dentist per 1,230 people.
At the same time, the frequency of office visits remains low. Many Romanians go to the dentist only when urgent problems arise, the main reasons being the high costs of treatments and limited access to discounted services.
The system, accused of underfunding
The representatives of the guild draw attention to the fact that dental services benefit from reduced funding from the public health system. According to the College of Dentists, only about 1% of the funds of the National Health Insurance Fund are allocated to dental medicine.
In this context, the professional organization requests an increase in funding for dental services and a reevaluation of the number of places available in the specialized faculties, in order to avoid accentuating the imbalance between the supply of specialists and the market demand.
The universities decide the number of places
The Ministry of Education specifies that medical universities have autonomy in distributing places on study programs, within the limits approved by the competent authorities.
Despite the problems reported by specialists, interest in dentistry remains high. Last year, at the national level, the competition was about two candidates per place, and admission to the state-funded places generally required results equivalent to averages above 7.50 – 8.00.
