It is known that FIFA is investigating the incidents after the World Cup final. World champion, Spanish Pablo Paez “Gavi” downplayed the incidents, describing them as a “slightly more violent side of football” which does not justify suspensions, however.
After the end of the final, the Argentinian Leandro Paredes had an aggressive reaction to Eric García. The footballer from Los Palacios (Sevilla) intervened and was, in turn, tackled by the player from the Boca Juniors team.
However, Gavi told reporters he did not believe the player “should be suspended”: “It would have been logical for him to be eliminated during the match“, he noted, claiming that although “it’s not the kind of image for children”, there is also “that side of football that is a bit more violent”.
The Barcelona player concluded: “That’s it: it’s all football. That’s how it has to be.”
A much harsher reaction was issued by former Swedish footballer Zlatan Ibrahimovic: “Paredes can count himself lucky that he wasn’t a player like me on the pitch. If I had been there, I would have headbutted him and been eliminated” declared the Scandinavian. “It is a lack of professionalism on his part. I don’t know what the Spanish players are doing. They are content to watch another player hit a teammate.“

The International Association of Football Associations has announced that it has opened an investigation into potential disciplinary violations by the Argentina national team. After the final whistle of the game in East Rutherford (New Jersey), midfielder Leandro Paredes appeared to assault members of the Spain team while they were celebrating the victory on the field. The match commissioner’s report was reviewed by FIFA, which has now decided to appoint a disciplinary and ethics prosecutor to investigate potential breaches of the world football governing body’s disciplinary code. “More details will be communicated by the FIFA disciplinary committee once the prosecutor’s report is complete“, the world forum stated in a statement.
On the other hand, it was noticeable that the players needed a few minutes to calm down. Paredes was even seen congratulating Pedri and Rodri as if nothing had happened. for “his inappropriate behavior towards the opponents or towards any person other than the match officials, in case of physical violence (elbow, fist, foot, etc.)“, he faces a ban of at least two matches under FIFA Disciplinary Code Article 49. If found guilty by FIFA’s investigation, Parades could be banned for at least two matches.
FIFA did not specify, at the same time, whether that commission is investigating the Argentine players for flying a banner proclaiming Argentine sovereignty over the Falkland Islands after the victory over England. That gesture appears to be a direct violation of Article 34.3 of the tournament rules. The AFA was fined for the same act following a 2014 friendly against Slovenia, but UEFA has previously taken tougher action for similar misconduct, handing out one-match bans to Spaniards Rodri and Alvaro Morata after they chanted about Spain’s claim to Gibraltar after winning Euro 2024.
