While several regions in Greece experience extreme temperatures, which during this period exceed 40 degrees, there are some destinations where the summer is much more bearable. Tourism experts recommend islands and mountain towns that benefit from milder temperatures, due to dense forests, altitude or constant Aegean winds.
According to travel expert Yahya Dawood, founder of Bnbstay and Greek connoisseur with over 15 years of experience, Samothraki and Thassos are among the coolest places in the country during the summer, reports express.co.uk. Alternatives with temperatures that are easy to bear are also on other islands, such as Crete, Mykonos or Santorini.

Located closer to Bulgaria than many of Greece’s southern islands, Samothraki registers temperatures of around 28°C in August. The island is famous for its forests, paths through shady gorges and “vathres”, natural pools fed by mountain waterfalls with cold water.
In turn, Thassos is mostly covered by pine forests that reach the seashore. The abundant vegetation helps to maintain temperatures a few degrees lower than established tourist destinations in southern Greece, where thermometers frequently jump 35 degrees.
The Meltemi Effect. On Mykonos, Tinos, Folegandros, Santorini, the wind keeps the heat at bay
In the Cyclades archipelago, the Meltemi wind, which blows from the north during the summer, makes the temperatures felt lower than those indicated by the thermometers.
Islands such as Mykonos, Tinos, Folegandros or the highlands of Santorini benefit from constant breezes that mitigate the effects of the heat wave and create more pleasant conditions for tourists, even in the middle of the day.

For those who prefer Crete, the specialist recommends mountain towns such as Anogia and Spili. Located at over 700 meters above sea level, near the Ida massif (Psiloritis), they are 6-8 degrees cooler than the resorts on the coast.
Anogia, about an hour from Heraklion, offers a rare combination in the Mediterranean in August: warm days and evenings cool enough that locals and tourists alike need a thin jacket to stay comfortable.
In the context of the heat wave affecting Greece, these destinations are becoming increasingly attractive alternatives for tourists who want to enjoy the Greek landscapes without the suffocating temperatures in the south of the country.
