Good news for students: European money is coming for social grants. How many young people will benefit from the money and when

The Ministry of Education and Research obtained the co-financing of the social scholarship with 60 million euros from European funds.

The Ministry of Education and Research announced on Wednesday, December 17, that it obtained additional co-financing of 60 million euros from European funds for student social grants, through the Education and Employment Program (PEO).

The sum will allow the payment of scholarships for approximately 40,000 students from vulnerable backgrounds in 2026, with the first payments expected to be made no later than February 2026, for the month of January, an official statement states.

According to the cited document, the scholarship fund in the new academic year will thus be close in value to that of 2024 and 2025 (after resizing) and will be approximately 35% higher than in 2023, benefiting both students financed from the budget and those who pay fees.

The co-financing in the amount of 60 million euros comes as a result of a dialogue held with the Ministry of Investments and European Projects (MIPE) and the European Commission and will be made from the European Social Fund Plus (FSE+).

In this context, the Minister of Education, Daniel David, asked the subordinate units to prepare the implementation procedures so that the first payment is made no later than February 2026.

According to the ministry’s statement, the scholarships will cover accommodation, food and other social rights, thus contributing to increasing the quality of education in university education and supporting students in difficulty.
