The Romanian coach, Laurențiu Reghecampf, is experiencing an incredible situation in foreign football, having to manage the same club in two competitions, held in two different countries.
The technician has been in charge of Sudanese side Al-Hilal Omdurman since August 2023, and challenges continue to arise at every turn.
The Sudanese Football Federation announced the resumption of the domestic championship in January, but in the meantime Al-Hilal Omdurman decided to participate in the Rwandan championship as well, due to the complicated situation in Sudan. Thus, Laurentiu Reghecampf finds himself in the unprecedented position of coaching the team in two competitions simultaneously, in two different countries, a rare situation in the history of football.
Al-Merrikh follows Al-Hilal’s example. Strict rules from the Sudanese federation
Al-Merrikh, Al-Hilal’s main rival, also chose to play in Rwanda. The Sudanese federation allowed both clubs to participate in the external competition, but on the condition that each field at least one team in the domestic championship.
In addition to this dilemma, Reghecampf also has to deal with the absence of ten important players, called up for the African Cup of Nations, which further complicates the management of the squad in an extremely busy calendar.
“At the moment, I have no idea who we will send to the championship in Sudan. All the speculations about this topic in the media are false. I want to return, first, the players we had in the national team, and only then will I decide how I will divide the squad!”said Laurentiu Reghecampf, quoted by sport.ro.
Reghecampf, at a hellish pace in January
The next period will be extremely busy for Laurentiu Reghecampf, who has to manage ten matches in a single month, that is, one match every 3.1 days. In the Rwandan league, his team, Al-Hilal Omdurman, are currently in 8th place, but have played four games less than most of their opponents.
The Romanian’s last defeat in the African competition was on December 18, before Christmas, in the match against Kiyovu, score 2-1. Since then, Al-Hilal Omdurman have won four straight, which gives them good morale ahead of the new wave of matches in January.
