The President of the Constitutional Court of Romania, Elena-Simina Tănăsescu, rejects the speculations according to which, in a meeting with the interim prime minister and PNL leader, Ilie Bolojan, cases pending before the Court were discussed.
The CCR statement comes after the information that the two met in the office of the President of the Senate, Mircea Abrudean, just a few days before the constitutional judges resumed the debates on the Integrity Law.
“As a result of the requests made by the media representatives and in order to correctly inform the public opinion, we make the following clarifications: The President of the Constitutional Court of Romania, Ms. University Professor Elena-Simina Tănăsescu, firmly and categorically rejects any speculation regarding the discussion of the cases before the Court outside the strictly legal framework”, transmit CCR.
However, the Constitutional Court does not state that the meeting between Elena-Simina Tănăsescu and Ilie Bolojan did not take place. According to the information published in the press, the president of the CCR and the leader of the PNL would have met in the office of Mircea Abrudean, while the president of the Senate was in Cluj.
The context of the meeting attracted attention in the conditions in which the CCR is to rule on Monday, August 17, on the unconstitutionality notifications regarding the Integrity Law. The normative act was contested both by the president Nicușor Dan, and by a joint referral submitted by 27 PNL and USR senators.
The clarification comes after the meeting, about which there was initially no official information regarding the topics discussed, generated reactions in the political space, in the context in which on Monday the Court is going to pronounce on the Law of Integrity, challenged including by the president Nicușor Dan and the PNL and USR parliamentarians.
