Heat code red. Ministry of Health recommendations and drinks to stay away from

Considering the fact that the hot weather is not being carried away, the Ministry of Health published on Thursday, July 11, on Facebook a series of recommendations, including avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun between 11am and 6pm.

Air conditioners are a real help to us during this period. If you have one, the Ministry of Health recommends that the temperature be 5 degrees lower than the ambient temperature.

In addition, another tip is not to use fans in the room if the temperature exceeds 32 degrees Celsius. If you do not have an air conditioner, the Ministry of Health recommends spending 2-3 hours daily in spaces that benefit from it (shops, public spaces, cinemas).

Warm showers are also recommended, but you don’t have to wipe yourself off with water. What’s more, on these fiery days it is recommended to wear sun hats. In addition, clothing items must be loose, made of natural fibers, and of light colors.

Don’t forget about hydration. Drink at least 1.5-2 liters of liquids daily, without waiting for you to get thirsty. “During periods of heat wave it is recommended to drink a glass of water (or its equivalent) every 15-20 minutes”reports the Ministry of Health.

At the same time, the consumption of alcohol (including beer or wine) should be avoided, as it favors dehydration and reduces the body’s ability to fight against heat.

In the same vein, the consumption of drinks with a high caffeine content (tea, coffee, cola) or sugar (carbonated soft drinks) is also not recommended, as they are diuretics.

Instead, it is recommended to eat fresh fruits and vegetables (melon, red melon, plums, cucumbers, tomatoes), because they contain a large amount of water. “A dose of yogurt provides the same hydration as a glass of water.” explains the Ministry of Health.
