Historic disaster for Romanian female gymnastics. For the first time after more than five decades, no athlete from Romania qualified in the apparatus finals of the European Championship!
It can be said that the European Championships hosted by Zagreb have officially registered the bankruptcy of Romanian gymnastics. After the men’s race went into anonymity since last year, it was the girls’ turn to record a resounding failure! After the qualifying competition held on Thursday, in Zagreb, the balance is tragic: no athlete from Romania will compete in the finals on apparatus! Practically, it is a disaster unprecedented neither in recent history nor in the average one, happened even in the “Nadia Year”, the one in which our great champion celebrates 50 years since the first 10 in history!
Sabrina Mânecă-Voinea disappointed
The result is all the more shocking since the team had as its leader Sabrina Mânecă-Voinea, considered by everyone to be one of the most valuable gymnasts on the continent. It seems, however, that the scandals she was at the center of affected the preparation process and thus her achievement ended up being the 13th place in floor qualifications, the favorite apparatus, that is, being the third reserve in the final. That means he has a 0.001% chance of competing there. On the beam, her other strong apparatus, she was in 23rd place!
But here are the marks obtained in the qualification competition, in which Romania was assigned to the 5th Subdivision. Those who are close to gymnastics know very well what those marks mean: average developments at best, if not mostly below average.

In the team competition, Romania was in 11th place
At this European Championship, there is also a team competition. Adding the best 3 marks on each apparatus, the tricolors finished in 11th place with 151.129 points. Another disaster, because it is a continental championship, not a world one. The only gain, if you can call it that, is that the top 13 were given the right to compete at the World Championship in Rotterdam in the fall.
Back at the European Championships, the Russian representatives dominated the competitions. Angelina Melnikova (55.932) and Anna Kalmykova (54.632), who competed under the neutral flag, occupied the first two places of the individual compound competition, the bronze going to Elena Colas (France, 13.266). The best individual-compound ranking for Romania was Alexia Blănaru, 21st place, with 50.365 points. The ranking was made directly after the qualification contest, with a separate individual final not being disputed, as in the old days.
