Artificial intelligence enters more and more in our lives, and Romania urgently needs people prepared to work with this technology. At a recently organized conference in Bucharest, European leaders and Romanian officials have drawn an alarm signal: Romania urgently needs digital education and training in AI, otherwise we risk staying behind.

Courses about AI, from school?

The Vice -President of the European Parliament, Victor Negrescu, says that it is time for Romanians to be no longer only technology consumers, but also creators. And it all starts with education.

“We have to introduce artificial intelligence in the school syllabus. Today’s children will work with more than we imagine”, Explained Victor Negrescu.

He proposed that the state invest in accessible courses for all ages, but also in teachers’ training, which should be able to explain to students, in a simple way, how you work (artificial intelligence) and what it uses.

Vice President Victor Negrescu stressed that a coherent strategy is needed for Romania to form specialists capable of integrating in various fields – not just in IT.

“Currently, we allocate for education and skills about 12-14% of the multiannual financial framework (MFF), and we say it should be 20%. Only 27% of Romanians have these skills, which is an alarm signal. We talk about a dynamic digital ecosystem, but with artificial intelligence it will not be about programming, but about the best programming, processes. ”

Vice President Victor Negrescu pleaded for a clear strategy that includes basic digital education, courses about AI from school, but also adult training,

Ministry of Education: “We are preparing changes in schools”

The representative of the Ministry of Education confirmed that the authorities are already working on adapting school programs, so that the new generations will learn basic digital skills, but also essential notions about AI.

“We want students to know what artificial intelligence means, how to use the risks.said the Minister of Education Daniel David.

Minister Daniel David was sharp: before promises about AI in all schools, a clear analysis of resources is needed.

“Even if some of us may not like the idea, we have to discuss the cost efficiency. Because sometimes we can have very new and interesting technologies, but the costs can be so high that, realistically, their implementation in a concrete system becomes impossible! I do not know if some of my colleagues will agree with what they say, base.“Said Minister David.

What do universities say

The representatives of the university environment present at the event pointed out that you have not just for IT. Any student – from medicine to arts – should know how to use digital tools and understand how algorithms work.

Proposed solutions: partnerships with technology companies, internships in innovative companies and digital laboratories on campus.

The event with the theme “Education and Digital Skills in the AI and Disinformation was “was organized by Smart Everything Everywhere, in Bucharest. The truth was a media partner of the event.
