A serious case of malpractice has sparked controversy at Sinaia City Hospital. The husband of a 33-year-old woman from Bușteni accuses the doctor who operated on her of being guilty of her death, which occurred after a cholecyst surgery.

The woman was admitted to the Sinaia Hospital a month ago, after arriving at the emergency room with a biliary crisis. The surgeon who took her over recommended the removal of the gallbladder. The laparoscopic surgery initially proceeded according to the protocol, and the patient remained hospitalized for 16 days, under medical supervision and treatment.
Oliviu Secăreanu, the woman’s husband, claims that upon discharge the doctor left part of a drain in his wife’s body, “a piece of hose sticking out of his belly, I don’t know exactly how big, covered by a gigantic bandage“.
When the patient presented herself for control, her condition was serious, and the surgeon decided to transfer her to the Fundeni Clinical Institute for further investigations. “I am told, sir, the situation is extraordinarily serious. We had to remove 70% of her liver because her liver was a bag of pus. My wife arrived at Fundeni with sepsis“, said Oliviu Secăreanu. The woman died yesterday.
The doctor’s point of view
The concerned doctor claims that the patient did not disclose all her medical history, although she was asked three times – at the UPU, in the ward and before the operation. “It is equally painful for us, the Sinaia hospital team. I want to specify the fact that important elements of the patient’s personal pathological history were not seriously declared upon admission to the Sinaia hospital. Which obviously aggravated the situation and required another kind of intervention, leading to the complication that followed. It’s frustrating because I knew what needed to be done, but I couldn’t act in time because I didn’t know all the real medical data“, said the surgeon, according to ProTV.
However, the woman’s husband claims that the only previous condition was a spasmophilia discovered 12 years ago.
Ongoing investigations
“The infection was the foundation of the diagnosisthat’s why he intervened. Now I don’t know what infection he’s talking about, if it’s another one. He ended up with a liver infection. I cannot comment on everything that happened after the discharge“, said Mariana Miu, the manager of the hospital.
An internal investigation was launched at the Sinaia Hospital to verify the doctor’s compliance with the protocols, and the Directorate of Public Health opened a separate investigation. The woman’s husband says he will file a complaint with both the Police and the Medical College.
The concerned doctor was also investigated in 2018, after allegedly forgetting a bandage in the abdomen of an 11-year-old girl, but the case was closed.
