Investigations required for breast cancer screening

Breast cancer, the most common oncological disease found in women in Romania, can be diagnosed in early stages, when there are numerous treatment options and the chances of healing are high.

Moreover, in these stages of disease, recommended surgery are often conservative, with the elimination of the tumor and keeping as much as possible. In order for this to be possible, periodic medical checks and screening tests are essential.

Breast ultrasound is one of the most handy methods of screening and diagnosis for various breast conditions, including for breast cancer. Doctors recommend a breast ultrasound once a year, being mainly indicated for young women, up to 40 years old. The examination is safe, not painful, does not use X -rays, has no contraindications, and the results are obtained immediately.

After the age of 40, the main investigation indicated for breast health assessment is mammography and it is recommended to perform it even in the absence of signs and symptoms that could indicate a breast damage. In this way, even small tumors can be discovered early, difficult to diagnose by other methods. In order to obtain the best results, the doctor may indicate a mammography with tomosynthesis, net superior to the conventional mammography, offering a much more precise diagnosis, with false positive or false negative results, with an exposure of patients at a lower dose of radiation and with less discomfort.

Depending on the result, the doctor may recommend carrying out additional investigations, such as blood tests for determining tumor markers, genetic tests, breast MRI or breast biopsy. Once the established diagnosis, the next step is to establish the treatment plan by the multidisciplinary oncological commission (tumor board). It depends on the type of tumor, the size and stage in which the disease has been detected and may include surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, hormonotherapy, immunotherapy or targeted biological therapies.
