Jaqueline Cristian surrendered in the first round at the Australian Open. Romania’s first racket, beaten by a top seed

The second Romanian present on the main draw of the Australian Open 2026 entered the competition on the second day.

After the success of Gabriela Ruse on the inaugural day, Romania’s first racket, Jaqueline Cristian (27 years old, 35 WTA), lost in two sets, 3-6, 6-7(6), to the Czech Karolina Muchova (29 years old, 19 WTA).

The first set started in favor of the Romanian, who led with 2-1 and break lead. From there the fall began. The opponent quickly reached 5-2 and there was nothing left for our athlete to do.

In the second set, Muhova served at 5-4 for the match, but could not close it out. Cristian made a break, then went ahead on the table.

In the tie-break, Muchova had 3-0, but Cristian did not give up. By a small miracle, he made it 4-3. In the end, Muchova prevailed 8-6 and goes to the second round, after a match of one hour and 54 minutes.
