Today, all eyes are on the Constitutional Court, where the magistrates must decide whether or not the first round of the presidential elections will be annulled, after two appeals were filed in this regard, by two of the candidates for these elections, Sebastian Constantin Popescu, from the part of the New Romania Party, and Cristian Vasile Terheș, supported by the Romanian National Conservative Party.

“The result of the presidential elections of November 24, 2024 was established following a fraud committed by the independent candidate Călin Georgescu, who violated Law 334/2006 regarding the financing of the electoral campaign for the presidential elections, hid the sources of financing, deceived the electorate through a massive online campaign promoting himself as the messianic man who fights with his bare hands and with ZERO lei campaign money with the entire political system in Romania. He promoted himself as the correct and honest candidate, only good to be voted for by Romanians, while he defrauded the electoral law by illegally financing the entire electoral campaign, having support from outside the country’s borders, from state entities with the aim of destabilizing Romania“says Sebastian Constantin Popescu, who requests the constitutional judges to invalidate the electoral result obtained by the candidate Călin Georgescu.

For his part, the president of the Romanian National Conservative Party, Cristian Terheş, demands the cancellation of the first round of voting on the grounds that USR representatives continued the electoral campaign after it was prohibited by law and there were irregularities regarding the votes given to Ludovic Orban, which influenced the order of the candidates ranked second and third. “We have another interesting situation regarding the candidate Călin Georgescu. You also reported in the press, we also saw a series of bots on the Internet that continuously called people to go to the polls and vote with a certain candidate, both before the vote, which is prohibited, and, especially, on the day of the vote. Now, the difference between him, who was placed in the first place, and the person ranked in the second place is quite large, it is up to the CCR to assess whether the way in which the respective campaign was carried out, which cannot be denied, influenced or not the election result“, Terheş declared.

What the Constitution says

The Constitutional Court annuls the elections if the voting and the determination of the results took place by fraud in such a way as to change the assignment of the mandate or, as the case may be, the order of candidates who can participate in the second round of voting. In this situation, the Court will order the repeat of the voting round on the second Sunday from the date of the annulment of the elections”, provides article 52, paragraph 1 of the Constitution.
