The Minister of Finance, Alexandru Nazare, declared on Sunday, August 9, that Romania needs a stable government as soon as possible.
Asked if he would accept the position of prime minister if the president asked him to do so, Nazare avoided a direct answer.
“I would not like to connect the two moments with this possible designation. Regarding the agencies, I did nothing but do my job, together with the teams from the Ministry of Finance, from the National Bank of Romania, with the support of the Prime Minister and President Dan. We went through these stages together.” said Alexandru Nazare, on Sunday, on Romania TV, according to Mediafax.
“It was a critical moment with the Fitch agency and of course the data from the budget execution helped us. We have 28 billion less deficit compared to last year and this happens with some increased investments at six months. So basically we have a 9 billion plus in investments and a 28 billion smaller deficit. And this is the credit of everyone who contributed to this budget execution. I’m talking about absolutely all the credit officers because was a very important effort to reduce waste and rationalize expenses so that we reach this moment”Nazare said.
“Romania needs a stable government as soon as possible”
Asked directly if he discussed with Nicușor Dan about the possibility of becoming prime minister, Nazare said that such negotiations must be conducted between the parties.
“I believe that these discussions take place between the parties and must take place between the parties, in the idea that Romania needs a stable government as soon as possible”stated the Minister of Finance.
Nazare emphasized that the need for a stable government was also signaled by the rating agencies, linking the formation of a new Executive to the budget rectification and the preparation of the budget for next year.
“We need a stable government to have a rectification done as quickly as possible, sometime in September-October, and work on the budget project for the year 2027. Discussions are taking place between the parties and with the president. When these discussions evolve, we will comment on them. But at the moment I am not in a position to comment on discussions that have not yet taken place”said Alexandru Nazare.
Nazare, favorite on Polymarket for the premiership
Alexandru Nazare is currently the favorite of Polymarket participants for the position of Prime Minister of Romania. On Sunday, the Minister of Finance was rated with 47.9% chances, compared to 18.6% for Sorin Grindeanu.
And Crin Antonescu, the joint PSD-PNL-UDMR candidate for the 2025 presidential elections, declared on Saturday evening that he sees Nazare as prime minister.
“I can also tell you who I would have appointed. (…) Whom Mr. Nicușor Dan should have appointed, in my opinion, obviously for three months and who, if he still wants to end this crisis honorably and with a governance solution, he should appoint in the next appointment, namely Alexandru Nazare“, said Antonescu.
