Minister of Defense, Radu Miruță: “The motion is a democratic tool, not a cheap PR toy”

The Minister of National Defense, Radu Miruță, will next week face a simple motion in the Senate, initiated by AUR and PACE – First Romania, which accuses him of compromising the credibility of the defense policy through “irresponsible and lack of strategic analysis” statements.

“AUR and other colleagues in the opposition decided to turn a fake news into another simple motion against me. The reason? A correct technical statement about Greenland, completely taken out of context and rolled with false headlines by a whole propaganda machine. I will go to Parliament, as is natural, out of respect for the institution and for the citizens who sent their representatives there by voting. But I remind the initiators: the simple motion is an important democratic tool, not a cheap PR toy. Using it on a made-up subject is not only a waste of time, it’s a form of contempt for the people you claim to represent.” the minister wrote on his Facebook page.

Miruță specified that he will respond to the debate in Parliament “with respect and data”.

“Maybe I’m too direct sometimes. Maybe, at certain moments, I lacked clarity. But I know one thing for sure: I’m not going to sweeten the reality and I’m not going to wrap the truth in half-sentences that sound good on TV. The role of a minister is to call things by their names, not hide them in polished packaging. I respect the citizens who voted for the AUR MPs. That’s exactly why I tell them honestly: ask them if this That’s all I can do for you. Let’s ignore the serious issues – how do we support the security forces in the region? I’ll repeat it with respect. But at least we’ll remember that politics is not just a show of an honest debate, on real issues, not campaigns built on fictions. I remain open, transparent and ready to work for the things that really matter.” added the minister.

About the motion

The motion, entitled “Progressive Minister Radu Miruță compromises the credibility of Romania’s defense policy through irresponsible statements and lack of strategic analysis”, aims to manage national security and defense policy in the context of statements relating to “the potential deployment of Romanian troops in Greenland”.

The 41 signatories, senators AUR and PACE – First Romania, express “firm disapproval of the way the Ministry of Defence, under the leadership of the USR, manages an essential field for the sovereignty, security and credibility of the Romanian state” and I argue that “The Romanian Army is not a tool of political communication and cannot be used to validate ideological agendas or to produce electoral capital”.

“The armed forces are one of the few institutions that enjoy the trust of the citizens, and this trust must be protected through responsible decisions and through sober and rigorous public communication. (…) Romania needs strategy, responsibility and competence in the field of defense, not political improvisation”, concludes the document submitted on Wednesday in the Senate plenary.
