“It’s not about Klaus Iohannis, it’s not about a specific person, we made a project to give the right to any Romanian citizen to be elected, according to the Constitution. It’s about the right of a citizen to run. Why Ciucă or Marcel Ciolacu, being in certain positions today, have the right to be president of the Senate, prime minister and to be able to run for the presidency as well, why is a man who is not convicted not allowed to run?”, declared Nicolae Ciucă to Digi24.
The PNL president denied that the project was submitted at the request of Klaus Iohannis.
“It is absolutely normal to capitalize on an experience of some people that many do not acquire in a normal activity. (..) We don’t know if his lordship will run or not, the Romanians are the ones who will choose, who decide. (..) We do not discuss such matters because everything that means the relevance of Mr. President Klaus Iohannis is relevant through the policies he has achieved in the last 10 years. He cannot be faulted for honesty. He respected democratic principles. It’s about what the value of his lady’s experience in the last 10 years meansi”, stated Ciucă.
Asked when he last spoke with Iohannis, Ciucă answered: “Today I spoke with the president about the 160 years of the Court of Accounts“.
Regarding the fact that the association with the current president of Romania could be unfavorable to the party, the liberal stated: “The candidacy of Klaus Iohannis helps us, PNL. President Klaus Iohannis was elected by 6 million people 5 years ago, if he has a support of 15-20%, it is enough to support an electoral approach for the PNL. KI was elected by 6 million people 5 years ago, if it has a support of 15-20% it is enough to support an electoral approach for PNL“.
The National Liberal Party submitted, on Wednesday, September 18, a legislative initiative that provides for the possibility that the current president of Romania, who is in the last 3 months of his mandate, can run for the parliamentary elections.
