Nicușor Dan, “bombarded” with questions in Brussels: Video capture

President Nicușor Dan is in Brussels, June 26-27, 2025, to attend the meeting of the European Council, according to a statement of the Presidential Administration. However, his arrival was shaded by a tense moment.

At the entrance, the head of state was stopped by several Romanian citizens, according to Digi24, supporters of Călin Georgescu, who reproached him for the lack of responses related to the cancellation of the elections in 2024 and the information on sources regarding the tax increases. They “bombarded” him with questions and accusations, without letting time react.

A woman in the Protesters Group shouted: “In the election campaign you have promised us that you will do everything possible to find out the truth. Since the elections were canceled and until today, we, the citizens of Romania, have no evidence“Nicușor Dan tried to answer, saying: “This month I was in charge of deficit and government“But he did not continue to continue, being immediately interrupted by other questions.

“Why did you increase the VAT?”

Tensions escalated when a man reproached him for the president: “You gave in writing that VAT will not grow. Why did you raise it?“Nicușor Dan denied the accusations: VAT of 19% did not increase. It’s not 20%, it’s not 21%”. The man replied: “He is going to grow up ”, and the president replied briefly: “Not! ”

In an increasingly pressed tone, another protester accused: “As usual, you get stuck,” while the head of state was trying to continue his answers.

Dissatisfaction related to pensions and income

Among the insistent questions asked to Nicușor Dan were those related to the level of pensions and the salaries of the dignitaries. “How do you expect someone to live with a pension of 500 lei?”a woman asked. She also added: “The salary of 20,000 lei was not enough and you added 50% extra ”.

The president tried to react, saying: “If you know better than me …“, But he failed to take the idea to the end.

An impossible dialogue

According to Digi24, more incorrect information was conveyed in the discussion with the protesters. The VAT was not increased and remains at 19%. Also, the minimum guaranteed pension in Romania is currently 1,281 lei, therefore the amount of 496 lei invoked does not correspond to a pension, but could be another type of social assistance.

Regarding the alleged salary of 20,000 lei of Nicușor Dan during the period when he was a general mayor, he was denied by the president, who stated that his salary was, in fact, of 14,000 lei. And the statement regarding a “50% allowance“It’s false.

The only attempt to explain came when the head of state said: “This month will follow …“, But without being able to continue the phrase. The tense atmosphere and the rapid pace of the questions in a high tone did not offer the president the opportunity to wear a real dialogue.
