An unexpected moment occurred at the European Gymnastics Championships in Zagreb, where Sabrina Voinea lost her qualification in the beam final after an appeal by her mother and coach, Camelia Voinea.
Sabrina finished the qualifications in ninth position, a ranking which, according to the regulations, initially ensured her access to the last act. Before her were three athletes from Russia, but a single country can have at most two gymnasts in the final.
Dissatisfied with the score received, Camelia Voinea decided to contest the grade. However, the decision had the opposite effect to the desired one. After checking, the judges reduced Sabrina’s starting score from 5.800 to 5.500. The change caused the Romanian athlete to go down in the ranking, and the position obtained after the reevaluation no longer allowed her to catch the beam final.
“It is important to learn from such situations!”
Nadia Comăneci reacted to the difficult situation in which Sabrina Voinea, one of Romania’s most important gymnasts, currently finds herself.
“In the case of Sabrina… it’s a shame that the situation at the beam had this outcome. In times of pressure, decisions are made very quickly and it is not always easy to predict the outcome of an appeal. The important thing is to learn from such situations that make a big difference between being and not being in the final!”commented Nadia Comăneci, according to Golazo.
The tricolors have qualified for the World Championships
Romania finished in 11th place in the team competition at the European Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Zagreb and thus obtained the tickets for the World Championships that will take place this fall, in Rotterdam.
However, the result is below expectations in terms of individual qualifications. Romanian gymnasts did not manage to reach any finals, neither in the team competition nor in the individual apparatus. With a total of 151.129 points, Romania finished in the first 13 teams, positions that ensure the presence at the World Championships.
The tricolor team was a very young one, and a large part of the responsibility fell to Sabrina Voinea. However, the athlete failed to achieve the expected results. On floor, one of her favorite machines, Sabrina finished 13th with 12.966 points, being the third reserve for the finals. On beam, she finished 23rd with 13,000 points.
