Oana Gheorghiu, from Dăruiește Viață, about the case of the 16-year-old boy, who died of peritonitis: “Tomorrow can be about any of us”

The co-founder of the Association Gives Life, Oana Gheorghiu, supported in a post on Facebook the need for a reform of the public health system, stressing that the future prime minister must come up with a concrete plan in this regard. According to the association’s founder, the Tîrgu Jiu tragedy should produce reactions and changes.

“A 16-year-old child died days ago. The election campaign is in full swing, and we, as a society, are anaesthetized. We settle for an empty statement from the Minister of Health and deafening silence from the Prime Minister. We have become indifferent to tragedies that should shake us from our foundations”wrote Oana Gheorghiu, founder of Dăruiește Viață on Facebook, believing that “an entire system has failed,” after the Târgu Jiu tragedy.

The co-founder of the association emphasized that in the case of the Tîrgu Jiu tragedy, apart from the surgeon, there were many other medical personnel in that hospital who could have taken some measures, at the same time pointing out that “a hospital should not depend on the whims of one man.”

“A functional system means mechanisms to prevent errors, abuses and lack of action. (…) The health system is an amalgam of arrangements: you know someone to help you, you have a chance. Don’t you know? Then maybe you’re lucky, maybe not”Oana Gheorghiu also transmitted.

According to the co-founder of the association, the Health Law has been amended thousands of times and has become “incoherent and impossible to apply”.

“Minister Alexandru Rafila came out to declare that “he would have operated” on that child. And with that, the discussion was closed. He doesn’t feel responsible. Just like the dozens of ministers who have been in charge of health do not feel responsible for the precipice we are in. Today, the problem of health is no longer about the lack of money or facilities, but about the lack of vision, strategy and leaders to take on the change”added Oana Gheorghiu, reporting that in 2022 she proposed a solution to prevent such tragedies, but it did not receive the attention of the Ministry of Health or the Government.

It’s time to say STOP and demand real health care reform. A reform based on clear rules, with hospitals operating according to well-defined procedures and protocols, not the whims or lack of involvement of individuals. We need to ask the political parties – and especially the one most likely to form the next government – to present us with a concrete plan for health, not one that will remain only on paper. How will they transform healthcare into a system truly dedicated to protecting and saving patients’ lives?“, Oana Gheorghiu also transmitted.

He died a few hours after being taken to hospital

A 16-year-old boy died a few hours after being brought to the Târgu Jiu County Emergency Hospital. The minor was suffering from a rare disease and did not feel the pain.

The teenager spent 6 hours in the hospital, being diagnosed with peritonitis, after the doctor refused to operate on him.

The surgeon from the hospital in Târgu-Jiu who refused to perform the operation, citing that he does not have the skills of a pediatric surgeon, is at fault, according to a recently adopted law.
