Prince William hired lawyers who helped his mother divorce. The reason is related to King Charles

Prince William appealed to the same law firm who represented his mother, Princess Diana, during the divorce by King Charles III, but there are no signals that his marriage to Kate Middleton would be in danger.

William’s decision is more related to a break to his father than to the couple’s life, according to Sheknows.

The British press writes that the throne heir has given up the legal team used by King Charles for decades-Harbottle & Lewis and its partner, Gerrard Tyrrell-lawyers who have also represented him since youth.

Instead, William is now represented by Mishcon de Reya, the company that managed Princess Diana’s divorce in 1996, a year before she died in a road accident. The company is specialized in multiple legal fields, not only in divorces, and will represent William in several legal areas.

This change does not signal problems in the relationship with Kate, according to sources quoted by the Daily Mail.

“William wanted to go on his way. He did not want to use his father’s lawyers. So simple. He wants to be his own master.”said a source. Another close relative added: “William wants to do things differently from his father and to be seen to make them different.”

The renunciation of Harbottle & Lewis-the company that also represented in the 2006 telephone interception scandal related to News of the World-is part of a broader effort to outline its own role in the monarchy.

As stated for the BBC in November 2024: “All I can say is that I try to do things differently, in a way in accordance with my generation.”

“And to understand better”added William, “I can do it with a smaller ‘r’ in the royal word, if you want – I think it is better.”
