The “Marin Sorescu” National Theater in Craiova (TNCMS) hosts, between October 7 and 13, 2024, Purcărete Week, an event celebrating 50 years of director Silviu Purcărete’s career.
Director Silviu Purcărete celebrates 50 years of activity
For the first time in Romania, the theatrical world and the audience fascinated by Silviu Purcărete’s creations meet in Craiova in an unprecedented celebration. Purcărete Week offers a foray into the current universe of the author of the two most extensive shows in the history of Romanian theatre: “Danaidele”, co-produced by the National Theater in Craiova, and “Faust”, a phenomenal production that has been playing continuously in Sibiu since 2007.
To mark 50 years of excellence of the Silviu Purcărete brand on the world stage, for one week, the Craiova National will bow to the creator to whom he owes a remarkable period of international glory. The well-known institution will host five shows from the current repertoire of theaters in the country: “The Story of the Blind Princess” (National Theater “Radu Stanca” in Sibiu), “The Bitter Lexicon” (Odeon Theater in Bucharest), “Gertrude” (National Theater “IL Caragiale ” from Bucharest), “A poisonous tragedy” and “Plugarul si death” (Vasile Alecsandri National Theater in Iași), as well as the screenings of the film “Somewhere at Palilula” and the documentary “Furtuna”, directed by Silviu Purcărete.
More than a selection of exemplary performances, the Purcărete Week jubilee will bring before the public the man and creator Silviu Purcărete in a series of meetings with those who are and have been his collaborators, friends and sources of inspiration : artists, managers or producers and spectators. The proposed program is a vivid image of the great director’s vision, an open door to his so complex universe.
Prominent personalities of the Romanian cultural space such as Mariana Mihuț, Victor Rebengiuc, Emil Boroghină, Dragoș Buhagiar, Vasile Șirli, Constantin Chiriac, Ofelia Popii, Claudiu Bleonț, Marius Manole, Marina Constantinescu, Sebastian-Vlad Popa and Octavian Saiu are among those who they will be with Silviu Purcărete at the anniversary hour.
Thus, the only Romanian director who was present in the official programs of the Edinburgh and Avignon Festivals, the most important theater events anywhere, but also the first creator of the Romanian scene who was talked about throughout the world after 1989 (re)comes to Craiova, in a moment of reference for Romanian culture.
