The Minister of Health, Alexandru Rogobete, reacted harshly after a doctor from the Târgu Jiu County Emergency Hospital was assaulted by the parents of a patient she was trying to save. The official stated that it is “of the night of the mind” that in 2026 a Minister of Health will have to ask people not to hit doctors in hospitals.
The incident took place in the Emergency Department of the hospital in Târgu Jiu, where the doctor was trying to stabilize a patient. The medical staff was roughed up and pushed by the girl’s relatives. The security guard intervened and the UPU staff immediately alerted the Police. When leaving the salon where the assault took place, the doctor slipped and hit his leg hard.
Minister Alexandru Rogobete emphasized that such acts should be included in the crime of insult, and the aggressors should answer firmly to the law.
“It seems crazy to me that in 2026 the Minister of Health will come on TV and tell people «please don’t go to hospitals to beat the doctors». But this is the reality we live in. We will have to come up with clear, concrete, simple legislative measures that can be easily applied and that will protect the medical staff from such characters. From my point of view, these characters should answer to the law,” said Minister Alexandru Rogobete.
The official specified that he had already discussed with the president of the College of Doctors from Romania, Cătălina Poiană, about the modification of the legislative framework so that the medical personnel benefit from increased protection.
“I mean protective measures for medical personnel and, why not, consider that such manifestations can be included in the area of outrage” added Rogobete.
Following the violent incident, two suspects, a man and a woman, were detained by prosecutors.
Later, the two were placed under judicial control for 60 days.
“I regret what I did. I did it out of desperation. I was a desperate mother, that’s all. I’m sorry. I apologize to the doctor and to all the people,” the woman said, after leaving the hearings, according to local media.
Asked why she threw hot coffee at the doctor, the woman replied: “It fell out of my hand. By mistake.”
