A farmer from Buzău County managed to bring a traditional Romanian variety of garlic to the Israeli market. Valentin Jecu, from Râmnicelu commune, exported for the first time garlic of the local Benone variety to an Israeli retailer, who ordered a first installment of 24 tons.
The representatives of the trader from Israel were interested in the intense taste of the Romanian variety and decided to test the product on the local market.
The farmer says there is already demand for this variety and plans to expand next year both the cultivated area and the amount for export.
“For the first time this year, this variety of garlic crosses Romania’s borders. It was not a big order, but an initial one of 24 tons. I want to increase the quantity and area for this variety next year, because there is demand”, said Valentin Jecu, according to Observator.
The Benone variety can also be identified by a particularity visible after the puppies are hatched. Brown inserts, specific to this traditional variety, can be seen inside.
Romania imports dozens of times more garlic than it exports
The success of the farmer from Buzău comes in a difficult context for Romanian producers. Trade data indicates a major imbalance between imports and exports of garlic. In a single year, more than 7,000 tons of garlic entered Romania, mainly from China and Spain, while exports were around 150 tons.
Thus, Romania imports about 45 times more garlic than it manages to sell on foreign markets. At the same time, consumers find Romanian garlic less and less in large chain stores.
Producers say one of the problems is the lack of modern storage facilities that would allow farmers to store their goods and deliver them consistently throughout the year. Added to this is the suspension of the de minimis aid program for garlic cultivation, which was an important form of support for producers.
Farmers warn that, without support measures and investments in storage and processing, the cultivation of traditional Romanian varieties could become increasingly difficult.
However, the export made by Valentin Jecu shows that local varieties can also have access to foreign markets when there is sufficient production and buyers interested in their characteristics. The demand from Israel could thus represent an opportunity for the expansion of Romanian garlic crops and for the promotion of traditional varieties outside the country.
