Samsung and Google have announced a new multi-year partnership to bring generative artificial intelligence (AI) technology developed by Google Cloud to Samsung smartphone users.
The partnership begins with the Samsung Galaxy S24 series, launched on January 17 at Galaxy Unpacked in San Jose, California.
Samsung will be the first Google Cloud partner to deploy Gemini Pro and Imagen 2 on Vertex AI through the cloud on smartphone devices.
Samsung is the first Google Cloud partner to deploy Gemini Pro on Vertex AI for users. Built from the ground up to be multimodal, Gemini can seamlessly generalize and understand, operate on, and combine different types of information, including text, code, images, and video. Starting with original Samsung apps, users can take advantage of the summarization feature in Notes, Voice Recorder, and Keyboard. Gemini Pro on Vertex AI brings essential Google Cloud features to Samsung devices, including security, safety, privacy and data compliance.
Also, users of the Galaxy S24 series can immediately benefit from Imagen 2, Google's most advanced technology yet for extracting text from images from Google DeepMind. With Imagen 2 on Vertex AI, Samsung brings image editing capabilities to users. These features can be found in Generative Edit in the S24 Gallery.
Generative Edit requires a network connection and Samsung account login. Editing with Generative Edit results in a resized photo up to 12MP. The digital watermark is superimposed on the image output when saving, to indicate that the image is generated by AI. The accuracy and reliability of the results generated are not guaranteed.
As part of this partnership, Samsung is one of the first customers to test Gemini Ultra, Google's most capable and flagship model for highly complex tasks. The S24 Series will also use Gemini Nano, the on-device LLM delivered as part of the Android 14 operating system, the most efficient model of Gemini.
Galaxy AI features may require internet connection, Samsung account login and/or update to the latest Android version. Product functionality may depend on app and device settings.
