AUR MP Mohammad Murad criticizes the intention to suspend the payment of student scholarships during the school holidays and argues that austerity measures must start with the political class, not education.
The AUR parliamentarian proposes that, before reducing the support given to students, the allowances of parliamentarians during the parliamentary vacation should be suspended and the subsidies granted to parties from the state budget should be reduced.
“If Mr. Ilie Bolojan believes that student scholarships can be suspended during the school holidays, then I propose a simple and fair rule: that the allowances of parliamentarians be suspended during the parliamentary vacation.
And, before you take a single leu from a student, take the subsidies granted to parliamentary parties from the state budget. Cut the money for the political apparatusfor propaganda and for parties before you save on the education of Romania’s children.
Students represent the investment in the future of the country. Politics is the expense of the present. A country that saves on children, but continues to lavishly fund parties, has reversed its priorities. Mr. Bolojan, if austerity is necessary, start with politics, not with students. Take from us before you take from them!”, said AUR deputy Mohammad Murad.
The Ministry of Education and Research put into public debate, on August 17, a draft Government decision that eliminates the payment of the social grant during school holidays.
According to edupedu.ro, the project published just two weeks before the start of the 2026-2027 school year modifies HG 732/2025, which approved the current methodology-framework for awarding scholarships a year ago, in the summer of 2025. The social scholarship registered the most beneficiaries (840,820, representing 60% of the total beneficiaries).
Interim Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan declared, on Wednesday, about the social scholarships cut during the holidays, that the logic of the Ministry of Education was that the scholarship should be allocated during the school months and not during the holidays, because it is not an allowance, but a form of supporting those with social problems to go to school.
He announced that he will discuss with the Minister of Education to analyze this measure, as well as the one related to the high school exam.
“There are two subjects that came from the area of the Ministry of Education, because they made some documents transparent, one that refers to the organization of exams by high schools, an order that is being debated, and a draft decision related to the payment of social grants, without the summer vacation. And I spoke with Minister Dimian on this topic. Regarding the first topic, we are in a situation where I understand that the law of 2023, which was adopted, provides that from the year these exams can be organized in the future. So the ministry has only implemented a law. There are two possibilities, or not to implement it in Parliament, if it is considered that this form of organization is not appropriate, there are all kinds of opinions, some for, some against, I agree that if it is not well organized, we risk spoiling things that are not in perfect condition in education. Then, things can be postponed and a decision is made.”said Ilie Bolojan at B1, srie News.
