The Belgium legend is retiring from the national team after destroying his team at Euro 2024

Defender Jan Vertonghen announced his retirement from the Belgian national team on Friday, after returning from the European Football Championship – Euro 2024, where the “red devils” stopped in the round of 16.

“The first, the last. Thanks for all the memories, I lived a dream”the defender wrote on his Instagram account, under a photo of himself in the national team shirt of Belgium, Romania’s opponent in the group stage at Euro 2024, which he defeated 2-0.

Jan Vertonghen played a total of 157 matches and scored 10 goals for Belgium, his last match being against France on July 1. An integral player in this game, he was the author of the own goal that qualified the French in the quarter-finals of the European Championship.

At the age of 37, Jan Vertonghen has been playing for Anderlecht Brussels since 2022, after playing for Ajax Amsterdam, Tottenham Hotspur and Benfica Lisbon during his career.
