The composer and theorist Dan Buciu, a prominent member of the Union of Composers and Musicologists of Romania (UCMR), died. The knowledge he left to his students and doctoral students, the significant contribution he had in the impulse and development of Romanian choral music are merit that remain in the memory of those who knew him.

Born in 1943, in Bucharest, Dan Buciu graduated from the Capital in 1968. He participated in the International Ferienkurse from Darmstadt (1970, 1982), where he attended Ligeti, Stockhausen, Maderna, Kontarsky. In 1992 he obtained his doctorate in musicology. In 2009 he received the title of Doctor Honoris Causa of the Faculty of Arts of the “Ovidius” University of Constanta, according to a statement of the UCMR sent on Sunday AGERPRES.

Dan Buciu was a professor of harmony, musical forms and analyzes and doctoral works at the National University of Music in Bucharest and its rector between 2000 and 2008. He held conferences in the US, at the universities in New York and Urban -Champaign, Illinois, 1994, and summer courses in France at Antun, 1996.

The Union of Composers and Musicologists in Romania offered several prizes

He was distinguished several times with prizes of the Union of Composers and Musicologists in Romania, from which, in 2021, he received the Grand Prize for the entire activity. He was rewarded with the Marin Constantin award at the “Marin Constantin 100” Anniversary Gala, held on February 27. He was a coordinator of the Vocal Music Section of the UCMR and artistic director of the International Week of New Music, between 2013 and 2015.

According to UCMR, its creation, of neoclassical invoice, is characterized by a modal language, sometimes of folkloric inspiration, sometimes of its own construction. Among his symphonic works are “Lespezi”, “Scenes” for the orchestra, “Romanian suite”, “Antinomies”, “Cristiane”, singing “the grass of the earth”, the cycle of “Lyrica mundi”, the “Wise and poetry” cycle, the chamber pieces “uneasy”, “sketches for a self -portrait. The choral creation includes, among other things, the works “Remember Hiroshima” for the choir and magnetic tape, “Ana Lu Manole” for the choir and folk tools with scenic movement, sonnet for flute, organ and mixed choir on rilke lyrics, games for the planet for children’s choir.

He developed volumes of tonal and modal harmony, of analysis, wrote articles and chronicles, evocations and many other texts with educational-musical profile.
