The American space agency, NASA, on Tuesday published new images of the crater formed by the crash of the upper stage of a Falcon 9 rocket belonging to the SpaceX company on the moon on August 5.

The photos, taken between August 11 and 12, are not the first to show the impact site, as the Korean space agency already published similar images on August 6.

The images obtained highlighted, in particular, lighter and darker streaks radiating around the crater, which is 18 meters wide and less than 3 meters deep, according to NASA, writes Agerpres.

According to NASA, the darker streaks “are composed of dust and surface rocks, modified over time by the solar wind, galactic cosmic rays and the impact of micrometeorites”brought to the surface following the impact. The lighter streaks are composed of matter from deeper areas of the lunar soil.

These images were captured by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO), which, in order to photograph a precise spot on the Moon, must wait for that spot to pass through its field of view. In this case, it took six days, NASA explained.

It was also necessary to tilt the probe precisely enough so that its camera was pointed at the crater during the pass about 100 kilometers above it. Then, it was necessary to trigger the camera at the right moment. “If the camera had taken the photo just 10 seconds earlier or later, the target would have moved about 16 kilometers from the center of the image.” explained the space agency.
