Lia Olguţa Vasilescu, the mayor of Craiova, announced that, starting Monday, Craiovans can request the issuance of the new electronic identity card, stating that he has already filed an application to obtain this document.

“Starting on Monday, all Craiovans will be able to request this modernized document, which brings many benefits. The new electronic identity card (those) has the size of a bank card and includes a Biometric Data CIP, offering a high level of security. It can be used as a travel document in the European space and allows online authentication in the relation with the state institutions,” Stated, on Friday, the mayor of Craiova in a Facebook post.

Lia Olguţa Vasilescu also explained the steps that the Craiovans must take for the release of the document.

In order to obtain the new identity card, the Craiovans can be scheduled online on the service hub of the Ministry of Interior, and for additional information can be addressed to the Community Public Service of the Persons within the Craiova City Hall, where they will receive all the necessary information regarding the documents and the steps to be followed. Costs for issuing electronic identity cards are funded from European funds, applicants do not pay anything“She added.

Document is available from May 8 in six counties

Starting on Thursday, May 8, the electronic identity card has become available for citizens over 14 years with their domicile in Brasov, Constanta, Iaşi, Oradea, Ploieşti and Timişoara. The programming will be carried out exclusively online, by accessing the Hub Services Portal.

Also, according to the Ministry of Interior, over 5,500 people from Cluj County and Bucharest have filed an application to obtain the new electronic identity card, and about half of them have already entered the possession of the new document.

Citizens can request the issuance of an electronic identity card, regardless of the validity period of the current identity document.

The first electronic identity card is issued free of charge for Romanian citizens starting at the age of 14, within the limits of the funds provided by the National Plan of Redress and Resility (PNRR). Subsequently, in order to request the issuance of another electronic identity card, the Romanians will pay a fee of 67 lei.

The main benefits of those are: standardized dimension, similar to bank cards, according to European norms; advanced security elements, which provide protection against falsification and identity theft; the possibility of using as a travel document; easy access to electronic services and the possibility of using for electronic signature.

From June 2025, they will be able to obtain the electronic identity card and children under 14 years old. In their case, those will be used as a travel document, as well as to establish identity in administrative procedures, says the ministry, considering that this is a more efficient solution than using the birth certificate.

Starting with May 20, 2025, simple identity cards will be released, which do not contain electronic storage support.
