The mayor of Chisinau contradicts Ciprian Ciucu, according to whom he would have learned before the PNL leadership about a possible appointment of Adrian Veştea for the position of prime minister, and claims that it has nothing to do with the political crisis in Romania.
The mayor of Chisinau, Ion Ceban, reacted promptly on Facebook, Sunday, July 19, after the statements of Ciprian Ciucu, who claimed that the Moldovan mayor would have known before the PNL leaders about a possible appointment of Adrian Veştea for the position of prime minister.
Ion Ceban says that he does not understand why his name is linked to the political situation in Romania and rejects any accusation regarding an alleged involvement in the negotiations for the prime minister in Bucharest.
“I am following the statements made in the public space against me, in which I would be accused, unjustifiably, of having any involvement in the political crisis in Romania. I have no idea what the mayor of Bucharest is referring to and how I would be involved. I consider these statements to be unfounded and without any real basis”. wrote Ion Ceban on Facebook.
In the same context, the Moldovan mayor specified that all the discussions he had with Ciprian Ciucu over time concerned administrative projects and that his dialogue with people from Romania is constant, but unrelated to the political negotiations mentioned.
“I talked with Mr. Ciucu about projects and I talk with a lot of people from Romania: politicians, representatives from the academic environment, notorious people, but such statements are out of the ordinary”, added the mayor.
Ion Ceban’s reaction came shortly after Ciprian Ciucu spoke, in a televised show, about the fact that the mayor of Chisinau would have known before the PNL leadership that Adrian Veștea was going to be appointed for the position of prime minister, without specifying, however, the source of the information on which he based his statement.
“You are not involved. But now the smart guy from Cotroceni who informed you will be fired. Tomac?”, someone writes in the comments section of the Chisinau mayor’s post, a sign that some are already asking questions about the person who could have revealed this information.
Mayor Ion Ceban was banned in Romania in 2025
Ion Ceban’s name is already associated with several controversies in the relationship with Romania. In July 2025, the Romanian authorities decided to prohibit his access to the national territory, and the measure also applies in the Schengen area for a period of five years.
After the announcement of the decision, the mayor of Chisinau claimed that it was a “political robbery” and accused the current government in Chisinau, including the Action and Solidarity Party (PAS), of using state institutions against him.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs from Bucharest explained then that the measure was taken for reasons related to national security.
“For reasons related to national security considerations, Romania ordered the measure of not allowing entry into the national territory for Mr. Ion Ceban and for two more citizens of the Republic of Moldova.
