The Minister of the Environment, Waters and Forests, Diana Buzoianu, called an extraordinary meeting of the Ministerial Committee for Emergency Situations (CMSU) on Sunday, after the severe weather phenomena and problems caused by floods in several areas of the country.
During the meeting, the warnings issued by the National Meteorological Administration (ANM) were analyzed, as well as the hydrological situation monitored by the National Institute of Hydrology and Water Management (INHGA). The authorities are constantly monitoring the evolution of the weather and water courses in order to be able to intervene quickly in the affected areas, in the context in which for the period of July 19-21, meteorologists have announced extreme phenomena, from episodes of heatwave and heightened thermal discomfort to periods of severe atmospheric instability, with torrential downpours, blizzards, hail and wind intensifications.
“Our priority is to protect people. All the institutions under the coordination of the Ministry of the Environment constantly monitor the evolution of meteorological and hydrological phenomena and are in permanent contact with the other authorities involved. Depending on the evolution of the situation, we will immediately take all the necessary measures to limit the effects and protect the communities. ANM will issue, punctually, where the situation requires it, nowcasting type warnings, so that the population avoids areas where dangerous hydrometeorological phenomena can occur”. said the Minister of the Environment, Diana Buzoianu, quoted by G4Media.
ANM representatives stated that they follow the evolution of phenomena in real time and update nowcasting warnings based on radar data and field observations.
For its part, INHGA monitors the water courses, with increased attention on the hydrographic basins in the Carpathian bend area and on the tributaries of the Siret, where there is the possibility of issuing new hydrological warnings.
The National Administration “Romanian Waters” reported that, at the time of the meeting, the main rivers did not exceed the defense quotas. The problems so far have been mainly caused by rapid runoff from slopes and torrents, which can generate local effects, especially in mountainous and submontane areas.
The operative teams of the Department for Emergency Situations (DSU) and the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (IGSU) were mobilized in the counties affected by the warnings, and the operative groups were activated in the risk areas.
The Ministry of the Environment advises people to follow the official warnings issued by the ANM and the INHGA, to follow the instructions of the authorities and to avoid areas near rivers and torrents during periods of severe weather phenomena. The RO-ALERT system operates normally and transmits warning messages when necessary.
