A student from the “BP Hasdeu” National College in Buzău won the gold medal at the International Chemistry Olympiad, and Romania achieved a remarkable record of four medals at the competition held in Uzbekistan.
Matei Gabriel Ursachescu ranked first and won the gold medal at the 58th edition of the International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO 2026), held in Tashkent, from July 10-19, 2026.
Romania was also represented on the podium by three other students. Mihnea Gabriel Alexe, from the “Tudor Vianu” National College of Informatics in Bucharest, and Mihai Stanciu, from the “Moise Nicoară” National College in Arad, won silver medals.
A fourth bronze medal was won by Tudor Ștefan Anghel, student of the “BP Hasdeu” National College from Buzău.
According to the Ministry of Education, the performance of Romanian students comes after a period of rigorous training, both theoretical and practical. The preparation of the national team was supported by teaching staff from the Faculty of Chemistry of the University of Bucharest.
The Romanian batch was coordinated by Prof. Dr. Daniela Bogdan, from the “St. Sava” National College in Bucharest, and by Prof. Dr. Mihaela Matache, from the Faculty of Chemistry of the University of Bucharest.
The Ministry of Education and Research congratulated the students and all those who contributed to their preparation and participation in the international competition.
At the level of the Ministry of Education and Research, the coordination of Romania’s participation in the International Chemistry Olympiad was ensured by the Directorate of Olympiads, Competitions, Partnerships and Extracurricular Education.
“The Ministry of Education and Research supports the participation of our country’s national teams in the international Olympics by covering participation fees and travel costs, per diem related to the days of stay, as well as in the organization and running of the stages preceding the international Olympics – the local/county/municipal and national stages of these competitions”, the institution transmitted.
