FIFA President Gianni Infantino has described the 2026 World Cup as the most successful edition in the competition’s history after Spain’s final win over Argentina at the New York New Jersey stadium in the final act of the tournament.
“I feel fantastic. I feel great, satisfied with the incredible success of this FIFA World Cup”, Gianni Infantino told ACLSports, congratulating both the new world champion and all the people involved in organizing the tournament.
The FIFA leader pointed out that the 2026 edition recorded record numbers in all important chapters.
Almost seven million spectators were present in the stands, over six billion people watched the matches globally, and the competition exceeded the threshold of 300 goals scored, reports News.ro.
“This World Cup has not only broken all possible records, it has shattered them, destroyed every record,” stated the head of FIFA.
Infantino also highlighted the social impact of the competition, saying images of fans in stadiums and host cities once again demonstrated the unifying force of football.
“Football at the World Cup is not just a competition, it actually exists to unite the world and to make the world a little bit better, maybe“, he said.
In his analysis of the tournament, the FIFA president singled out Rodri, named the best player of the competition, as well as Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe, Erling Haaland, Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham. He also appreciated the emergence of new stars and the surprise stories that marked the competition.
“You can’t script a perfect World Cup the way it played out. I think we need to invent a new vocabulary, new words to define the success of this tournament“, Infantino also declared.
FIFA’s attention now turns to the 2030 World Cup, the anniversary edition which will mark 100 years since the first competition and will be hosted by Spain, Portugal and Morocco, with special matches scheduled in Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay. In parallel, the world forum will analyze the future of the 48-team format and possible changes to the rules of the game.
“Nothing can match the power and magic of the World Cup, because the world needs events like this to bring people together”, concluded the FIFA president.
We recall that fifty members of the European Parliament are asking the FIFA organization to investigate the conduct of its president, Gianni Infantino, amid possible violations of the forum’s political neutrality rules.
