In a comment on Facebook, the Minister of Education, Mihai Dimian, reacted after the case of a candidate from Alba county who was suspected of having tried to cheat the Baccalaureate exam with the help of an electronic device, but who was not removed from the exam hall.
It all started from the case presented by the general school inspector of Alba County, Cornel Sandu, who reported that a high school student taking the exam in a center in Campeni was suspected of using a small helmet to receive help during the test. According to the head of ISJ Alba, the supervisors requested the intervention of a policeman, but the candidate allegedly told the agent that he could not be controlled without a warrant.
“Sir, don’t touch me unless you have a warrant“, the candidate would have said to the police officer called to the exam center, according to Cornel Sandu’s statements.
In this context, the Minister of Education, Mihai Dimian, pointed out that the methodology of the national exams allows the verification of candidates suspected of fraud, and if these measures are not sufficient, he considers requesting the support of the prosecutors to issue body search warrants.
“I have not personally analyzed this situation, but if it is true, then there are provisions in the methodology (it can be checked upon entering the room and access is not allowed, or art. 11 paragraph (6) can be applied, taking into account the provisions of art. 11 paragraph (4)). But, if, following experiences, more is needed, then we can also collaborate directly with the prosecutor’s office to issue body search warrants, in which case the consequences for the person are not only those mentioned in our examination methodology but also those of a criminal nature”, commented the Minister of Education on Facebook.
Starting from the case of the student suspected of having a helmet during the Baccalaureate, the head of the Alba School Inspectorate signaled the fact that the phenomenon of copying in exams has gained momentum in recent years and that, although the members of the commissions carry out checks, the appearance of increasingly smaller and harder-to-detect electronic devices makes it almost impossible to identify all attempts at exam fraud.
“Every year, we eliminate candidates that we find with various devices. We eliminate somewhere around 10% of what is eliminated in the country. (…) It’s a phenomenon that we knew was happening. In our country, it generally happened in the area of the Western Mountains. That’s where most of the candidates were eliminated in the past years. From my point of view, we should find (…) a local jamming solution, I don’t know. We do everything that depends on us. The members of the commissions I do my best under the given conditions, but it’s impossible to track them all”, said the head of ISJ Alba.
