The National Assessment begins in the 4th grade. The change brought about by PISA tests

Fourth grade students are taking the first test of the National Assessment today: the Language and Communication test. The grades will not be included in the catalog or used as a means of ranking or ranking, but they have the role of x-ray: they provide a realistic picture of the child’s level of development and possible difficulties, so that they can be corrected by the teaching staff.

This year’s changes

This year, the assessments come with news:

  • the assessment tasks/test items focus more on concrete aspects (knowledge, skills, attitudes, values), applicable, connected to the daily life of students;
  • there is the possibility to expand the skills assessed, for greater curricular relevance

The new elements were established last fall, by order of the minister, at the initiative of Daniel David.

“Thus, in the 2025 – 2026 school year, within these evaluations (EN II – IV – VI), in order to meet the requirements regarding applicability in the daily life of students, items aimed at functional literacy skills with practical applications, including from other curricular areas, are piloted. In this way, the evaluations will reflect the new curricular approach through which the subjects also aim at the concrete aspects of applying the knowledge, skills, attitudes and values built in the learning process to students’ everyday lives”the representatives of the Ministry communicated.

The new items are of the PISA type and are based on “mobilizing knowledge to solve problem-situations, formulating opinions and arguing as training for critical thinking applied beyond school subjects, in learning for life”.

What is the role of National Assessments in small classes

The National Assessments in 2nd, 4th and 6th grades are not based on ranking, like the 8th grade exam.

The purpose of these tests is to provide data to both classroom teachers and educational units, in such a way as to adapt the educational process to the needs of students.

Grades are listed in the catalog only at the parents’ request.
