This year, tourists are bucking traditional summer norms and spending their holidays in cooler countries, reports euronews.com.
More and more tourists from central and southern Europe, where summer temperatures can reach 30 or even 40 degrees Celsius, are heading to Umeå in Sweden.
With its 17 degrees Celsius weather in July, peaceful and quiet atmosphere and absence of traffic jams, Umeå is proving to be a very popular tourist destination with tourists arriving in large numbers.
Campsite manager Charlotte Nillson has noticed that an increasing number of people from Finland are arriving at the largest campsite in Luleå. She believes the explanation is the weak Swedish krona.
Visitors from the Netherlands are also among those choosing Sweden over Spain, for example, and Nilsson believes successful marketing campaigns are behind this.
“The Dutch come to reception and tell us that they saw Norbotton on TV and are now going to the North Cape“, she says.
Sweden has also seen an increase in the number of foreign home buyers in this northern European country of around 10.5 million inhabitants. Climate change is another significant reason for this development.
Andre Hamacher and Angelina Pril moved from Germany to their new Swedish home in May. They bought the holiday home in Arvidsjaur four years ago, but didn’t originally plan to live there full-time until last year.
“In summer we have fish 40 degrees Celsius; it’s cooler hereHamacher stated.
