In the following days, two mountain roads starting from the town of Uricani in Hunedoara (video), located in the wild land at the foot of the Retezat and Vâlcan mountains, will enter the construction site.

Mountain roads from Hunedoara, in the construction site

National Road 66A crosses the Jiului de Vest valley, through the towns of Petroșani, Aninoasa, Vulcan, Lupeni and Uricani, and from the town of Uricani in Hunedoara it continues for another 20 kilometers through the villages of Valea de Brazi and Câmpul lui Neag, stopping in the Câmpusel area located at the border of Hunedoara and Gorj counties.

In the 2000s, the road was asphalted up to Câmpusel (video), at the foot of Retezat and Vâlcan mountains, and from here it is continued by a difficult forest road that crosses Domogled Valea Cernei National Park, towards Băile Herculane and Orșova.

The sector, which was modernized two decades ago, has deteriorated over time, although it is more trafficked, being in an isolated mountain area. In the past, it was used more for transporting coal and stone from the Neag Field quarries and timber, but over time the spectacular area has attracted more and more tourists.

A seven-kilometer sector of DN 66, in Uricani, will enter the construction site. The Regional Directorate of Roads and Bridges Timișoara issued for March 18, 2024 the order to start the execution works for the consolidation of DN 66A, on the sector within the administrative radius of Timișoara Regional, between km 16+624 – km 23+800, in Uricani locality, Hunedoara county, informed DRDP Timișoara.

“The works will be executed by SECOL Romania SRL, with a value of 32,684,545 lei (VAT included). The duration of the contract is 8 months. The main works that will be carried out on the approximately 7.2 km are the consolidation of the road structure, embankments, ensuring the drainage of rainwater, retaining walls of the slopes on some sectors, installation of parapets, markings and horizontal and vertical signaling elements, arrangement of intersections with side roads, construction of bus shelters, parking spaces, access to properties“, informed DRDP Timișoara.

The new road through the mountains to Gorj county

In the middle of March 2024, the modernization works of County Road 672 C, from the Valea de Peşti dam (video) to the border of Hunedoara county, with Gorj county.

The investment carried out by the Hunedoara County Council amounts to 48 million lei, funds attracted through the “Anghel Saligny” National Investment Program, and aims to modernize over five kilometers of road, starting from the Valea de Peşti dam in Hunedoara, towards the Sohodolului Gorge from Gorj county.

“Currently, the technical condition of the county road is precarious, with the resistance structure made up of layers of extremely diverse granular materials, some contaminated along the entire length with clay, placed directly on the ground. The paving is in a bad technical condition, with frequent defects and on extensive surfaces, with a reduced road surface, with slopes affected by erosion phenomena or with materials flowing from the slope, without devices to ensure traffic safety”, it is stated in the specifications.

The county road starts at 672 C has a total length of 37 kilometers, of which 31 kilometers are in Gorj county, where most of the sector has been paved.

The road starts from Răchinţi village (Runcu commune, Gorj) and crosses the mountains towards Uricani, where it intersects with DN 66A. Currently, it is very rarely used, due to the isolated area in which it is located and the state of decay.

With the completion of the works, the road through Cheile Sohodolului will also become accessible for cars.
