“There is no reason to panic, because no law will be passed, no Romanian will do mandatory military training, we will not be forced to join the army”underlined the president of the Senate Defense Committee, Nicoleta Pauliuc.
However, the senator stated that they are discussing a “bill that the Ministry of Defense is working on, which actually talks about a voluntary military internship or voluntary military training”showing that “we will all see the terms and conditions when this draft law receives all the institutional approvals“.
The head of the defense committee at the Chamber of Deputies explained that the project of the voluntary military statute concerns women and men between 18 and 35 years old, and the proposed period is 4 months, with certain rewards, regarding free accommodation, salary and some incentives.
“It was discussed on three legislative lines: the Defense Law, which is in its final form and will go on the approval circuit; Law 446, which was conceived and started in 2022 and which includes the status of the voluntary military in the term and there are, indeed, some clarifications that the minister presented, we have not seen the draft, regarding those who can do (voluntary internship – no): women and men between 18 and 35 years old who have not completed the military internship. The period they proposed is four months and, of course, certain rewards regarding free accommodation, salary, which, of course, can still be discussed there, so also some incentives. (…) I did not go into detail on the salary proposal, it was to go, in the free discussions, somewhere at three gross average salaries for that period. The last project discussed would be the status of military personnel, which at the moment is in the final configuration of the draft”said Laurentiu Leoreanu.
The members of the Defense Committees of the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies had, on Tuesday, a meeting with the Minister of Defense, Angel Tîlvăr, who conveyed that it was agreed that the legislative projects reach the debate of the Parliament with maximum speed.
