The PSD gives an ultimatum to the liberals regarding the date of the presidential elections. Romașcanu: “Predoiu has two decisions on the table”

The spokesperson of the PSD, Lucian Romașcanu, said on Monday that the party cannot agree to the weekly transformation of the electoral calendar, and that the date of the first round would be decided, this week, by the Minister of the Interior Cătălin Predoiu, together with PNL, having a choice between September 15 and 29.

Another coalition meeting was held today. Economic issues, governance issues were also discussed, but naturally there were also certain discussions related to the date of the elections. In February, March, an entire calendar was decided for the entire electoral year 2024, and Mr. President Ciucă brought forward the date of September 15, the date we had in mind when it was politically decided to initiate a Government decision that would have the date of September 15 as round I and 29 as round II. Meanwhile, the liberal colleagues last week came up with a new proposal, also stated by Mr. Ciucă, that September 29 be the date of the first round of the elections”. said PSD spokesman Lucian Romascanu.

Romașcanu stated that “unfortunately, today there were attempts to discuss these data again”, regarding the meeting of the governing coalition, stating that the Minister of the Interior Cătălin Predoiu will have to decide this week, together with the PNL, having a choice between September 15 and 29.

“PSD cannot agree to the weekly transformation of the electoral calendar, because we are not the only candidates in these elections, so the world must have a predictable calendar. Consequently, on this discussion it remains that during this week, Mr. Predoiu, who at this moment as Minister of the Interior has two government decisions on the table, the one of September 15 and the one of September 29, as the dates of the first tours, to decide , being a PNL minister, to decide together with the PNL, which of these two dates are convenient for them, we making this concession to the PNL, being able to accept even the date of September 29 if Mr. Predoiu will initiate a government decision in this regard“, said the spokesperson of the PSD.

Asked what will happen if the liberal ministers block this decision, Lucian Romașcanu answered: “ This is a discussion that will take place after we have this government meeting. It’s premature. I am convinced that we still have a partner who keeps his word. We cannot, because some may not reach the second round, move the date of the elections according to these wishes. We are in the situation where, in February-March, a complete calendar for the whole year was requested. I came with him. Now the decision is with the Minister of the Interior. I don’t want to say what will happen next because I still think that from the point of view of liberal colleagues honor is the most important thing and they will stick to what they said“.

Asked if the coalition will break up if no consensus is reached, the PSD spokesperson replied: “I don’t think this coalition will break“.

Rareș Bogdan said, in relation to the government’s decision regarding the date of the first round of the presidential elections, that if the next government meeting is on Friday, “there should be this decision assumed by the Minister of the Interior Cătălin Predoiu“.

The PSD and PNL leaders met on Tuesday, to definitively determine the date on which the presidential elections will take place.
