Traffic lights at all pedestrian crossings on roads with two or more lanes. What else does the bill adopted by the Senate provide?

The Romanian Senate adopted a draft law by which the authorities are obliged to install traffic lights at all pedestrian crossings on roads with at least two traffic lanes in each direction, according to promotor.ro.

If the bill becomes law, the road administrator will be required to install traffic lights at all pedestrian crossings, if that road has two or more traffic lanes in each direction, and in certain areas, speed limiters.

The legislative proposal was tacitly adopted by the Senate, being forwarded to the Chamber of Deputies for debate.

If the project is also adopted by this forum, it will then be sent to the President of Romania for promulgation.

After publication in the Official Gazette, the authorities will have 90 days to apply the new provisions

Here are the concrete obligations road administrators will have:

– to install traffic lights at pedestrian crossings and to create refuges or spaces prohibited for vehicle traffic, on roads or streets with at least two traffic lanes per direction.

– to install protective parapets and make road improvements to reduce the speed of vehicles in the vicinity of educational units, health or socio-medical assistance units, markets, fairs, as well as in areas with increased risk of accidents, through the care of local authorities or the road administrator, as the case may be.

More hours of training at the driving school

However, the project also has other provisions, such as many hours of training at the driving school.

More precisely, it also proposes a 50% increase in the number of hours of practical training for future drivers.

Currently, trainees are required to do 30 hours of practical driving, but if the project becomes law, they will need at least 45 hours, according to the cited source.

The exam for obtaining the driver's license could also be given in front of a private examiner.

According to the draft law adopted by the Senate, “the examination for obtaining the driver's license can also be carried out by natural person examiners certified by the competent authority, according to the rules of application of this law. The designation of the examiner (…) is carried out by drawing lotsand”.
